Office of Professional Practice
The Office of Professional Practice works with professionals and organisations to support people who use our department's services. We drive best practice to help maximise people's quality of life, promote their development and safeguard their rights.
We use evidence-based information to help give recommendations about the way our department's policy and services are delivered.
Our Senior Practitioner (Disability) has powers under the Disability Act 2006 to protect the rights of people subject to restrictive interventions and compulsory treatment. The Senior Practitioner also ensures compliance of appropriate standards.
We brought together the former Offices of the Principal Practioner (Child protection and Youth justice) and Senior Practitioner (Disability) to strengthen our commitment to delivering holistic services for clients with complex needs.
Case reviews and consultation - Office of Professional Practice
We want to safeguard the rights and quality of life of vulnerable people and can offer help to people who are seeking a case review or case consultation support.
Anyone requesting a case review or case consultation must submit the appropriate form in writing and email it to the Office of Professional Practice.
People with a disability, a parent/guardian or advocate can request a review of matters related to restricted intervention or compulsory treatment by phoning (03) 9096 8427 or emailing email@example.com.
Case consultation on complex, sensitive and challenges cases
Case review or consultation requests can be made when there are serious concerns and specialist input is required to inform decision making.
The office provides four types of review or consultation:
- Primary case consultation – direct work with clients, their carers and case managers on complex cases
- Secondary case consultation – consultation, advice and recommendations to case managers and planners and other key service partners regarding complex cases
- Case review – formally review the history of an individual case to evaluate practice effectiveness and opportunities for improvement
- Service review – formally review a service to evaluate practice effectiveness and opportunities for systematic improvement for restrictive interventions and compulsory treatment.
Accessing assistance that is not case consultation
We regularly respond to phone calls and emails seeking information and advice that we can provide during a call or by return email. Advice can relate to restrictive interventions, compulsory treatment orders and Child protection matters.
