The total number of coronavirus (COVID-19) cases in Victoria is 1,792, with 13 new cases reported yesterday.

Yesterday’s new cases are made up of two linked to a new family outbreak, six linked to known outbreaks, one detected in a returned overseas traveller in hotel quarantine, three identified through routine testing, and one remaining under investigation. One previously notified case has been reclassified and removed from the overall total.

There have been no new deaths reported. To date, 19 people have died from coronavirus in Victoria.

There have been 193 confirmed cases of coronavirus in Victoria that have been acquired through unknown transmission. There are currently 91 active cases in Victoria.

Currently, five people with coronavirus infection are in hospital, including two patients in intensive care. 1,680 people have recovered from the virus.

Of the total 1,792 cases, there have been 1,492 in metropolitan Melbourne and 239 in regional Victoria. The total number of cases is made up of 953 men and 838 women. More than 635,000 tests have been processed to date.

Two of the new cases are linked to a family in Keilor Downs and are close contacts of a known case. The new outbreak has not been linked to the previously reported family outbreak in Keilor Downs.

Five of the new cases have been found in contracted security guards working at the Stamford Plaza hotel. All five worked shifts over a similar period at the hotel. Investigations into potential sources of transmission, testing of staff and follow up discussions with close contacts are ongoing. The Department’s outbreak squad will continue to work closely with the hotel to protect contractors, staff and guests.

A link has been found between the Stamford Plaza outbreak and the south-eastern suburbs family outbreak previously reported, with an adult member of the family having worked as a security contractor at the Stamford Plaza hotel. Further investigation of this link and all other aspects of these outbreaks is ongoing.

One of the new cases is a close contact of a known case associated with the Rydges on Swanston Hotel outbreak. The individual concerned was already in quarantine when they developed symptoms.

“Thanks to Victorians playing their part, staying at home and getting tested, we have made some great progress in slowing the spread of coronavirus,” Victoria’s Chief Health Officer Professor Brett Sutton said.

“However, we are still seeing transmission in households and other settings. It remains critical to practice good hygiene - wash your hands regularly and cough and sneeze into a tissue or your elbow and try to avoid touching your face.

“Stay 1.5 metres away from anyone you don’t live with and avoid crowds, especially indoors. If you can keep working from home – you must keep working from home.

“And if you do feel unwell with any symptoms of coronavirus you should get tested. This includes fever, chills, cough, sore throat, shortness of breath, runny nose or loss of sense of smell.”
