Media release
14 June 2020

The total number of coronavirus (COVID-19) cases in Victoria is 1720, with nine new cases reported yesterday.

There have been no new deaths reported. To date, 19 people have died from coronavirus in Victoria.

There have been 184 confirmed cases of coronavirus in Victoria that have been acquired through unknown transmission. There are currently 40 active cases in Victoria.

Currently six people are in hospital, including two patients in intensive care. 1657 people have recovered.

Of the total 1720 cases, there have been 1431 in metropolitan Melbourne and 238 in regional Victoria. Several cases remain under investigation. The total number of cases is made up of 915 men and 805 women. More than 590,000 tests have been processed to date.

Yesterday’s new cases are made up of three cases detected in returned travellers in hotel quarantine, one case identified through routine testing and five cases linked to two new outbreaks.

During yesterday’s investigations into a confirmed case in a general practitioner, it was identified that while at work the GP had close contact with a confirmed case, prior to their diagnosis. The doctor remains asymptomatic and went into isolation immediately upon being informed they were a close contact.

Two household family contacts of this previously confirmed case have now also been diagnosed with coronavirus, taking the total number in this outbreak to four.

The GP worked at Cedars Medical Clinic in Coburg and Croydon Family Practice on 9 June and Lilydale Medical Clinic on 11 June. All sites are being appropriately cleaned. Contact tracing of staff and patients at the three GP clinics began yesterday and is continuing, however if anyone is experiencing any symptoms they should get tested and self-isolate.

A second new outbreak was also identified yesterday among interconnected family households in Melbourne’s northern and south-eastern suburbs. Three new cases were linked yesterday to one previously confirmed case in this family taking the total in this outbreak to four. Extensive contact tracing is under way.

“Thanks to Victorians playing their part, staying at home and getting tested, we have made some great progress in slowing the spread of coronavirus,” Victoria’s Chief Health Officer Professor Brett Sutton said.

“However we are still seeing transmission in households and other settings.” Professor Sutton added. “It remains critical to practise good hygiene - wash your hands regularly and cough and sneeze into a tissue or your elbow and try to avoid touching your face.

“Stay 1.5 metres away from anyone you don’t live with and avoid crowds, especially indoors. If you can keep working from home – you must keep working from home.

“And if you do feel unwell with any symptoms of coronavirus you should get tested. This includes fever, chills, cough, sore throat, shortness of breath, runny nose or loss of sense of smell.

“If you attended the Black Lives Matter march in the city on Saturday 6 June there is currently no requirement to quarantine or get tested if you do not have symptoms. However, should you develop any symptoms, no matter how mild, it is critically important that you get tested.”
